A Web Designer for Small Businesses That Need the Site to Earn Its Keep

New websites and redesigns for owners who want more than a nice-looking homepage: a site that loads quickly, ranks for what you sell and makes it easy to get in touch.

A small business website has one job that matters more than all the others: turning a stranger who found you on Google into a phone call, a booking or a quote request. Looks help, but they are not the job. The sites I design start from that question. Who is arriving, what are they trying to decide, and what would make them pick up the phone today rather than keep comparing?

Because I am the designer, the developer and the SEO on every project, the structure of the site is planned around real search terms from day one. Service pages are written for the phrases your customers actually type, headings follow a clear hierarchy, images are compressed before they ever reach the server, and every page has one obvious next step. Nothing has to be retro-fitted for Google after launch, because it was built in.

If you already have a site, a redesign does not mean starting from zero. I look at what currently brings in traffic and enquiries, keep what works, and plan redirects for every address that changes. If a previous designer or website redesign company left you with something you cannot update yourself, I can rebuild it on a platform you will actually be able to use.

When it makes sense to call me

  • Customers tell you they found a competitor first
  • The site was built years ago and you avoid sending people to it
  • You cannot change a price or a photo without calling someone
  • It looks cramped or broken on a phone
  • Enquiries come in by word of mouth but almost never from the website
  • You are starting a new business and want it right the first time

What you get

  • A plan before pixels

A short discovery call, a look at your competitors and your search data, and a page-by-page sitemap we agree on before any design work.

  • Design that fits your trade

A layout and visual style built for your customers, shown to you as a working preview, not a static picture.

  • Copy that answers questions

Help shaping or writing the words on each page so visitors understand what you do, where, and how to start.

  • SEO from the foundations

Keyword-mapped pages, clean headings, titles, meta descriptions, schema markup and an XML sitemap at launch.

  • Built to be quick

Lightweight theme, optimised images and caching, aimed at green Core Web Vitals on mobile.

  • Yours to run

A recorded walkthrough of how to edit pages and posts, plus the option of a care plan if you would rather not.

How it works

  1. DiscoveryWe talk through your services, customers and goals. I review your current site, if there is one, and your competitors.
  2. Structure and designYou approve the sitemap, then a working design preview. Two rounds of changes are included.
  3. Build and contentI build the site on a private staging address, load the content and set up forms, tracking and redirects.
  4. Launch and handoverGo-live, Search Console and analytics checks, and a walkthrough so you are comfortable making edits.

Why work with me on this

Several of the businesses I built sites for in the late 2000s still work with me today. That kind of relationship only lasts when the site keeps paying for itself, so I design for the enquiry first and the portfolio screenshot second.

More about my background

Mihail was referred to me by a mutual associate, Prof. Deltina H., in 2014. Since then he has been instrumental in launching two professional WordPress websites for my consulting practice. Mihail impressed me with his thorough and deep knowledge in all things website development, cyber security, e-commerce, and membership sites. He has a very quick turnaround time, provides timely communication, and is on top of his game in this field.

Questions people ask

How much does a small business website cost?

It depends on the number of pages, how much writing is involved and whether you need booking, payments or other features. I quote a fixed price after a free call. For independent market ranges, see the website maintenance cost guide for running costs and ask me for a build estimate.

Do you write the content?

I can. Many owners prefer to send rough notes and let me shape them into clear, search-friendly pages. Others write everything themselves and just want an edit. Either works.

Will I be able to update the site myself?

Yes. I build on editors that are friendly to non-technical people and record a short training video for your site. If something goes wrong, it can be rolled back from a backup.

Is a redesign risky for my Google rankings?

Only when old addresses disappear without redirects or content that ranks gets cut. I map every existing URL before launch and watch Search Console closely for the weeks after.

Talk to me about web design

A few lines about your site and what is bothering you is enough. You will get a reply from me within one business day: what I would look at first, and what it would roughly involve.
